The medical terminology refers to common, benign skin growths that typically appear as a dark brown, black, or pale wart-like lesion on the skin’s surface. Typically, they appear round in shape and are soft to touch.
While they can be very small at first, they can reach up to 3cm in size as they develop. Often found on the face, chest, shoulders, or back, seborrheic keratoses are non-cancerous and usually painless. However, they can sometimes cause itching, discomfort, or cosmetic concerns, leading people to seek removal.
Similar to moles, seborrheic keratosis occurs when cells form a cluster in the top layer of skin. The growths can appear anywhere on the body, except the soles of your feet and palms.
While your local GP can usually identify a seborrheic keratosis simply by its appearance, it might be necessary to conduct a histology test for further examination.
While anyone is at risk of developing a seborrheic keratosis, medical research has identified the following three common contributing factors:
Over 50s: the skin growths normally affect those in middle age, and rarely occur in younger people. Roughly a third of patients develop growths by the age of 40.
Family history: around half of all patients with multiple seborrheic keratosis are thought to have inherited the condition.
Fair skin: traditional seborrheic keratosis appears much less frequently in darker skin – although there are variants affecting those of African, Asian and Hispanic descent.
