As the name suggests, these common cysts grow from sebaceous glands that occur all over the body. They vary in size, grow slowly and are commonly filled with a yellow, oily substance called sebum that covers your hair and skin.
Normally found on the face, neck and torso, the cysts develop when a gland or its duct gets blocked or damaged. This is usually caused by some trauma to the skin, such as a wound or acne.
Most people find that cysts don’t usually cause any pain, however they can hurt if scraped or pressed hard. Over time some cysts can become swollen or infected, prompting individuals to seek removal on both medical and cosmetic grounds.
According to the NHS website, anyone regardless of age or gender can develop a skin cyst. As yet, medical studies have yet to find any definitive causes but there do appear to be some contributing factors.
For example, there is some evidence to suggest that sebaceous cysts can run in the family and become more prevalent in middle age. Women are slightly more prone to cysts, as are those suffering from acne and some rare conditions, including Gardner’s syndrome (familial adenomatous polyposis – FAP).
A small percentage of sebaceous cysts can be cancerous. Warning signals include a large size (more than 5cm wide), swift reoccurrence after removal and any signs of soreness and infection.
