Laser hair removal has grown in popularity in recent years, but did you know that there are certain things you can do to maximise its benefits? In this article, the skincare experts from Clearer Clinics offer their pro tips to achieve the best results.
What should I do before laser hair removal?
Before booking an appointment, do your homework and research the skin clinic. Check that they employ qualified staff, have a good reputation and have plenty of online reviews from satisfied customers.
We recommend cleansing and exfoliating the target area a couple of days prior to treatment so that the laser can work at maximum efficiency, free from dead skin and hair follicles. While it is important to ensure that the skin is clean, do not use moisturiser as this can lessen the effect of the laser.
When you attend the clinic, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will not irritate the skin. When choosing what to wear, please note that the skincare expert will apply a cream to cool the skin following your treatment.
Finally, you should shave 24 hours before your appointment. Unlike waxing, shaving leaves the hair root in the skin so the laser still has a clear target.
What should I NOT do before laser hair removal?
We advise against having a spray tan between laser hair removal sessions as your skin colour will be much closer to your hair. For optimal results, the laser requires a clear contrast between the skin and hair tone.
As mentioned above, don’t do any plucking or waxing. A laser is the most permanent way to remove hair so you do not need to use other techniques. You should also avoid bleaching your hair and drinking caffeine-based drinks as this can increase skin sensitivity.
Hair removal techniques involving lasers and electrolysis are not suitable for women during pregnancy.
How can I make laser hair removal more comfortable?
Here at Clearer Clinics, we use the latest laser machines that include cooling technology so that clients remain comfortable and pain-free. If you are concerned, you could take a small dose of pain relief tablets before your appointment and ensure you drink plenty of water.
Post-treatment advice
Following your laser hair removal session, avoid shaving the affected area for several days. You need to give your skin sufficient time to recover and heal. Prevent hot water from contacting the skin by not showering or bathing for 24 hours. Use a mild soap and warm water that are kinder to your skin.
Keep the affected area clean and dry, so no deodorant, make-up or moisturiser. Try to stop yourself from scratching the skin as this will only make the irritation worse. However, exfoliating can help to remove hair.
While it might sound obvious, please do not use a sunbed or sunbathe for at least a fortnight after laser hair removal as your skin will be sensitive to UV light.
